Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Steve Smith

Steve Smith brings a wealth of experience to the Heat, having played or coached for over 20 years at the high school, collegiate and premier club levels.  He played goalkeeper at George Mason University and received his United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license shortly thereafter. 

As a high school coach he led both the C.D. Hylton High School girls and Battlefield High School boys teams to impressive post season runs, including a state semi-finalist finish for the girls.  He was named District Coach of the Year twice and was the Virginia High School Coach of the Year in 2001.

On the club level Smith has coached over 45 NCAA Division I soccer players and has led teams to multiple state cup championships and a U.S. Youth Soccer National Finalist finish.

 

 Assistant Coach:  Kevin Hilton

Kevin Hilton, in addition to being an assistant coach on the Heat, is the head girls’ soccer coach at Battlefield High School.  In his playing days Kevin was a four year starter at Oswego State University, selected team captain for his junior and senior seasons, and was named to the All-Conference team in 1997.

Upon graduation he was named varsity assistant soccer coach at C.D. Hylton High School.  In 2005 he was named the inaugural varsity soccer head coach at Freedom High School (Woodbridge, VA).  He has been working with Steve Smith in the club soccer ranks since 2006.

Kevin holds a USSF National “D” coaching license and an ENYSSA “A” coaching license.

 

Assistant Coach:  Keith Cox

Keith Cox is the goalkeeper coach for the Heat.  In college he was the starting goalkeeper all four years at Mount Olive College, was team captain for three years and was named to the All-Conference team for two years.  Following his college career he was named starting goalkeeper on the Northern Virginia Royals in the second division of the United Soccer League.

Keith’s coaching career has included stints as head soccer coach at Wayne Country Day School, assistant coach/goalkeeper trainer at C.D. Hylton High School and Central District Goalkeeper Coach for the Virginia Olympic Development Program.  His club soccer experience includes positions as assistant coach and head coach for PWSI, Stafford, and Fredericksburg teams and as Director of Goalkeeping for the Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association.

Keith holds a USSF National “D” coaching license and NSCAA GK Trainer Level I and Advanced GK Trainer certifications.
